Then they basically search the internet for site owners that haven't updated their versions of wordpress and still have the vulnerability.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The easiest way to combat this is to make sure you're on the notification lists from wordpress for security updates. Then make sure you update as soon as possible after the notification.
